The Faculty of Computer Science was created in March 2014. The new faculty includes three departments. Two of them have been formed on the basis of the existing HSE divisions: the School of Software Engineering and the School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science. Previously these two departments were included in the Faculty of Business Informatics. The other divisions of this faculty have become constituents of the Faculty of Business and Management.

The School of Software Engineering was created in 2006 at the Faculty of Business Informatics. First Master’s students graduated from the School of Software Engineering in 2008, the first bachelors - in 2010. Officially, these students specialized in Business Informatics. In 2009 the specialization in Software Engineering per se was developed in Russian Federation. The HSE was the first university who recruited students for the new Software Engineering programme in 2010. The programme saw its first Master’s graduates in 2012. Two years later first bachelor’s students graduated from the progamme: they were students who started their studies in BI and then switched to SE when that innovative programme had been launched.

The School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science was founded in the Faculty of Business Informatics in 2006. From 2008 this School has been producing Master’s graduates, and from 2010 - bachelor graduates.

High-quality applied education enables our graduates to compete successfully for lucrative jobs in major international and Russian companies. More specifically, our graduates are employed in large IT companies (Google, Microsoft, Bing, Yandex), banks (Sberbank, Gazprombank, VTB 24, Deutsche Bank), consulting and audit firms (Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst&Young, Accenture, etc.). Other alumni embark on their own projects. Some graduates choose academic career and become researchers in leading Russian and foreign universities.
