The founding of the Joint Department with SAS at the Faculty of Computer Science in 2018 is only a natural continuation of the collaborative relationship that SAS and the Faculty have enjoyed since 2014. The new department is aimed at improving the quality of specialist training in data analysis. In the programme, students develop necessary practical skills, learn about the effectiveness of business intelligence, and explore the specific ways in which analytical algorithms can be applied to real-world problems.

Work of the SAS specialized department at the Faculty of Computer Science of the Higher School of Economics will improve training programs in data analysis and bring the business expertise accumulated by the company into the educational process. The National Research University Higher School of Economics became the first Russian university to open a SAS specialized department.
Creating the department, which is set to launch its work on August 31, is a logical continuation of the existing collaboration between SAS and the Computer Science Faculty, as well as a response to the current situation in the labor market.
Business analysts are highly sought after in the financial sector, retail, consulting companies, and other areas. At present, demand for them vastly exceeds supply and is constantly growing, and the skill level of graduates in related professions often does not meet the employers' requirements.
"We often hear that here is a shortage of analysts and that the education does not correspond to the realities of the market," says Julia Sanina, HR and University Relations Manager, Russia and CIS at SAS. "Last year, SAS expanded its internship program to include its clients. In other words, we recruit and train interns both for ourselves and for our customers. Now, we have seen in practice how much effort it takes to make a graduate intern into an expert. Additional training and getting familiar with the problems of business take about six months."
Herein lies the difference in studying at the Higher School of Economics: academic training is combined with business knowledge, and students understand the practical importance of the knowledge obtained and the numerous ways to apply it. Launching a specialized SAS department within the HSE Faculty of Computer Science will help in improving students' applied and business skills.
"HSE seeks to introduce innovative learning models based on real-life cases, and SAS is a natural partner for us. We have been collaborating since 2014, almost since the foundation of the faculty. And we see great value in launching a department where students will get a complete understanding of problems requiring analytics of modern data analysis methods and business processes and will be able to implement their own projects. Launching the SAS department will expand our students' opportunities," says Dr. Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the HSE Computer Science Faculty.
The SAS department's work will improve the skills of students not only from the CS faculty, but also other HSE faculties. For example, SAS courses and project works have attracted the interest of the Faculty of Economic Sciences. During the training students will master the necessary practical skills and will learn the effectiveness of business analytics via concrete examples.
The SAS specialized department at the Higher School of Economics will be headed by Nikolai Filipenkov, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, Principal Business Solutions Manager, Risk Research and Quantitative Solutions at SAS EMEA.
