I will give an overview of the invariants constructed in the works of Nicaise–Shinder–Kontsevich–Tschinkel–Lin in order to distinguish non-(stably) birationally equivalent algebraic varieties. In particular, we will focus on various versions of Burnside groups, describe their properties, and discuss applications to the study of groups of birational automorphisms of varieties.
