About the Department

The department was established in 2013 in conjunction with the Institute for Systems Analysis (ISA), which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Department of Informatics, Computer Equipment and Automatization. Researchers at the Institute are carrying out basic research in the field of systems analysis and information technology, including problems with modeling complex objects, artificial intelligence and decision theory. The ISA has a number of leading scientific schools that work actively in various fields of systems analysis, mathematical methods, and problem-focused information technology and applications. The Institute holds leading global positions in a number of scientific fields. Bringing in ISA employees as teachers and academic supervisors for undergraduate and graduate students of the Department allows for a flexible structure to be created that is capable of considerably broadening and adding to the scientific specialization of the department, as well as increasing the number of potential research areas for master’s and post-graduate students. In order to carry out its scientific and teaching activities, the Joint Department with ISA prepares preprints, research reports, monographs, textbooks and manuals on subjects taught by teachers of the Department. The Head of the Department is Professor Yuri Popkov, who is the director of the Institute and a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The objectives of the Joint Department with the Research Institute of System Analysis are:

  • To ensure a high level of training and carry out research on key theoretical directions in system analysis and its instrumental environment;
  • To offer special classes and seminars on contemporary methods in systems analysis with a focus on applied problems in economics and finance;
  • To improve the quality of training by involving undergraduate, master’s and post-graduate students in academic research being carried out by Department staff;
  • To assist the Faculty of Consumer Science in teaching core classes and electives in undergraduate and master’s programmes, as well as help other departments of the HSE.
