Faculty Committees

Academic Committee    Study Initiative Support Committee

About the Committee

The Academic Committee was founded as part of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) and includes representatives of all faculty departments. The Academic Committee gives approval to the allocation of funds requested by faculty and students for the purpose of supporting:

  • students’ participation in research schools, conferences and seminars;
  • students’ participation in conferences to make presentations (travel grants).

Applications requesting support for students’ participation in intellectual competitions (e.g., contests, hackatons, etc.) are reviewed by the faculty’s Study Initiative Support Committee.

Faculty members are kindly asked to submit any questions they might have regarding the application process and academic event organization to the Executive Secretary of the Academic Committee, as well as members representing various departments.

Student Participation in Research Schools, Conferences and Seminars

Competitions to fund FCS students’ participation in academic events (summer/winter schools, conferences, and seminars) are held throughout the year.

If you are interested in participating in a competition, please proceed as follows:

  • Fill in the application form for taking part in an academic event through your HSE personal profile. Students usually don’t have a personal profile by default, so, the first step would be to get a profile. To do that, please visit the Online Media Unit webpage, download the form, fill it in, and send it via e-mail to portal@hse.ru.
  • Attach the following documents to your application:
  1. invitation from the organization hosting the academic event;
  2. motivation letter;
  3. recommendation letter from your academic supervisor or lecturer;
  4. provisional academic transcript (you may comment on some of your grades in the motivation letter).

After taking part in academic events, students must submit reports following a standard template, including an article for the Faculty’s news feed, as well as the presentation made at a conference, if it is organized by the Academic Committee.

Maximum reimbursements for trips are as follows:

  • to Russia’s regions – 30,000 roubles;
  • to CIS countries – 35,000 roubles;
  • to Turkey and Israel – 50,000 roubles;
  • to European countries – 65,000 roubles;
  • to Australia and South Africa – 70,000 roubles;
  • to Asian countries, except for Turkey and Israel, as well as Mexico, Central and South America – 75,000 roubles;
  • to the USA and Canada – 80,000 roubles.

Participation in Conferences for the Purpose of Making a Presentation (Travel Grant)

For all applicants, the procedure is as follows: on your personal profile, follow the links ‘Applications and reports’ and ‘Конкурс на поддержку участия сотрудников, аспирантов, студентов НИУ ВШЭ в научных мероприятиях'.

What are the Maximum Reimbursements for Trips?

The FCS Academic Committee follows the same guidelines as the HSE Academic Fund. The Academic Fund shall support no more than two international trips to academic events per applicant (the second one granted is for applicants receiving third tier academic bonus at the time of their application), no more than one trip to an academic event in Russia, and no more than one trip to a CIS country.

According to the Academic Fund’s regulations on travel grants, the sizes of travel grants are as follows:

  • to Russia’s regions – 30,000 roubles;
  • to CIS countries – 35,000 roubles;
  • to Turkey and Israel – 50,000 roubles;
  • to European countries – 65,000 roubles;
  • to Australia and South Africa – 70,000 roubles;
  • to Asian countries, except for Turkey and Israel, as well as Mexico, Central and South America – 75,000 roubles;
  • to the USA and Canada – 80,000 roubles.

Funds allocated for specific trips may be smaller or (in exceptional cases, which must be substantiated) bigger than the specified limits.
