Decision Making Mini-Course Presented at the Faculty of Computer Science

Decision Making Mini-Course Presented at the Faculty of Computer Science

On 5–13 December, HSE Faculty of Computer Science hosted a mini-course Decision Making by Enes Eryarsoy from Sabanci University (Turkey).

The course covered two main methods of teaching the process of decision making: learning the right approach and learning actual behavior of people. The course was attended by students of the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Graduate School of Business and other departments of HSE University.

Эрйарсой Энес,
Professor, Sabanci Business School, Sabanci University (Turkey)

I had the idea to offer a mini-course on decision making because of my long-standing interest in this topic, although it is not my main area of research. The purpose of this mini-course is to provide an overview of fundamental principles and current trends in decision making. I saw the potential benefit of such a course for students, as traditional concepts of decision making have undergone significant changes in light of technological advances.

I really enjoyed working with the HSE students. Their eagerness to attend the elective classes was impressive. All the students were attentive and active, which contributed to a lively discussion.

Of course, I am interested in organizing another mini-course for HSE students. Its topic could be, for example, consumer analytics.

Darya Omirbekova,
Third-year student of the Software Engineering bachelor's programme

Decision Making course was interesting for me, as I used to play chess. In this game it is necessary to make many decisions relying on various algorithms, logic and your predictions of the next moves of your opponent. The questions about decision-making methods raised in the course are relevant not only in chess, but also in everyday life, where everyone faces the problem of choice.

The organization of the course was excellent, the material was presented in an accessible way, and Professor Eryarsoy created an open and friendly environment among the students. I particularly remembered the different models and methods, as well as the heuristics of the decision-making process. Of particular interest was the methods of collecting information from potential buyers to learn more about their preferences.

In June, while participating in Sabanci University International Staff Week, Tamara Voznesenskaya, the first deputy dean of the Faculty and academic head of the Data Science and Business Analytics bachelor’s programme, met with Enes Eryarsoy. Following the staff week, it was decided to further develop the partnership between HSE University and Sabanci University.

Later, Enes Eryarsoy paid a return visit to HSE University, during which he held a number of meetings and discussed areas of further cooperation. He also gave a lecture for the participants of the summer school on data analysis.

First Deputy Dean

Enes Eryarsoy was invited to teach this mini-course due to his expertise in business analytics, marketing analytics and business statistics. These fields are of great interest for HSE University students.

Further, we plan to create a joint course for students of the Data Science and Business Analytics bachelor’s programme. This program is aimed at training analysts and data scientists capable of building analytical models for business, so Enes’ experience will come in handy here.
