“I studied Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin and received
my PhD from the University of Karlsruhe with a thesis on individual decision making under uncertainty. After a post-doc year at Harvard I joined the Department of Economics at the University of Vienna where I received my habilitation in 1997. From 1997 to 2003 I was associate professor of economics at Bonn University, and since 2003 I am full professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (formerly, University of Karlsruhe).My research centers around topics in microeconomic theory, especially decision theory and social choice theory. In either area, I am interested both in normative questions and in issues related to behavioral analysis.I held visiting positions at a number of institutions abroad, among them the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the University of California at Davis, the University of Melbourne and the University of Auckland.I am managing editor of Social Choice and Welfare  , member of the Editorial Board of Economics and Philosophy,co-editor of the "Handbook fo Rational and Social Choice" for Oxford University Press as well as member of the council of the Society for Social Choice & Welfare.”

 Title:    A Characterization of the Single-Peaked Domain

 Abstract: It is proved that, among all restricted preference domains that guarantee consistency (i.e. transitivity) of pairwise majority voting, the single-peaked domain is the only minimally rich and connected domain that contains two completely reversed strict preference orders. It is argued that this result explains the predominant role of single-peakedness as a domain restriction in models of political economy and elsewhere over the last seven decades. Several intermediate steps of the proof shed further light on the structure of restricted domains that guarantee transitivity of pairwise majority voting, among them the result that a single-crossing (`order-restricted´) domain can be minimally rich only if it is a subdomain of a single-peaked domain.
