International scientific conference “Development of Russian-Italian Cooperation in Biomedicine”
On November 14, 2024, the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) hosted the international scientific conference “Development of Russian-Italian Cooperation in Biomedicine”
The international scientific conference “Development of Russian-Italian interaction in the field of biomedicine” took place on November 14, 2024, organized by the International Laboratory of Bioinformatics of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The conference brought together around thirty participants, including members of the Association of Italian Scientists in Russia, as well as leading Russian and Italian experts in the field of biomedicine.
The conference opened with welcoming speeches by Maria Sergeyevna Poptsova, Head of the International Laboratory of Bioinformatics at HSE University, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, and Associate Professor, and Aldo Spallone, MD, Professor, and Research Fellow at HSE University. In their remarks, they emphasized the importance of international collaboration in medicine and bioinformatics and highlighted the significance of integrating Russian and Italian scientific approaches to develop advanced solutions.
The conference program included several presentations.
Aldo Spallone presented on modern approaches to treating malignant brain tumors and prospects for improving outcomes. In his talk, the professor shared unique experiences in neurosurgery, presented videos of his surgeries, and discussed research findings.
Maria Sergeyevna Poptsova shared the results of an analysis of glioma microenvironment based on single-cell sequencing data. The head of the laboratory explained how fibroblast cells were discovered in human brain tumors in her study and demonstrated how these cells affect glioma behavior. Tumor-associated fibroblasts in gliomas are virtually unexplored, making them an entirely innovative subject for research not only in the field of single-cell sequencing but also in glioma studies overall.
Yuri Petrovich Rubtsov, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Virology at the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, RAS, discussed the prospects of T-cell therapy for autoimmune and oncological diseases.
Dmitry Olegovich Glazov, dentist, PhD in Medicine, and CEO of "Partner Clinic" LLC, gave a talk on digital technologies in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.
Arjune Skagnetto, a representative of ASUGI (Italy), delivered a presentation focused on in-depth ECG analysis using a time-to-event approach.
The program concluded with a presentation by Maxim Sharaev, head of a laboratory and senior lecturer at Skoltech. He spoke about artificial intelligence methods for localizing and planning neurosurgical operations using generative models. Maxim Sharaev also shared methodologies for detecting epilepsy through brain MRI using generative models.
The conference concluded with discussions on opportunities and prospects for Russian-Italian collaboration in biomedicine, as well as plans for further joint research.
