Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) presented their work at theInternational Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2026) in Seoul, South Korea, one of the leading scientific events in the field. Several projects by the faculty’s researchers received the prestigious Spotlight distinction.

The final of the Russian Competitive Programming Cup in the Algorithmic Programming discipline has taken place. Seven students and one lecturer from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science took part in the event. Bachelor’s students from the Applied Mathematics and Information Science programme claimed the top three places.

Darina Dvinskikh has been working at the Faculty of Computer Science since September. She has been hired via the tenure track programme. Darina told us how her choice of research topic for the master's thesis determined her path in science and where the Wasserstein barycenters can be useful.

Three researchers of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science are among the winners of the 2022 Ilya Segalovich Award: Research Professor Dmitry Vetrov, Associate Professor Alexey Naumov and doctoral student Sergey Samsonov. The award, established by Yandex in 2019, is aimed at supporting young researchers and the scientific community in the field of IT in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

On November 1st-3rd, 2022 the International Laboratory of Stochastic Algorithms and High-Dimensional Inference of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis with the support of HSE AI Centre and the Russian Science Foundation organized the first autumn school and conference on artificial intelligence ‘Fall into ML’. The new format of the event included a school for students and young researchers.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals took place on November 6–11 in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The team from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) took ninth place, winning bronze and achieving the best result among Russian universities.

Alexander Tarakanov started out in science as a physicist, earned his PhD in the USA and worked both in industry and academia. Since September, he has been working at the Faculty of Computer Science via the Tenure Track programme. We talked to him about his research, favourite papers and plans.

Vladimir Podolskii, Head of HSE’s Big Data and Information Retrieval School, and Elena Vakulenko, Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Economics, have both received awards for research in mathematics and labour studies, respectively.

By early spring, HSE will have launched a range of new courses on Coursera in psychology, computer language analysis, economics, media and international relations.
