The school was created in 2014 simultaneously with the Faculty of Computer Science on the basis of the Joint Department with Yandex, which was part of the faculty. The School of Big Data and Information Retrieval, which is headed by Associate Professor Dmitry Vetrov, Ph.D., will be centred around research groups, leading world-class research in the field of machine learning, distributed computing, scalable algorithms for processing large datasets, computer vision, text processing, information retrieval and graphical models. Department staff members are regularly published at prestigious international IT conferences.

The project was developed in cooperation with the computer vision group led by Yury Biokov from the University of Western Ontario. The project by Dmitry Vetrov was developed in cooperation with Carsten Rother from the Technical University of Dresden.
