In my opinion, the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science faces three main objectives. The first is to improve the quality of education. This means recruiting highly qualified, outstanding teachers, developing relevant educational programmes, choosing interesting and appropriate courses, and effectively organizing educational processes, student research and project work. Of course, the whole faculty is focused on these areas. However, if something goes wrong, the Dean is responsible for the overall outcome. The second objective is promoting research according to the highest global standards. Therefore, it is necessary to foster an environment in which research activity is natural and honorable. Moreover, we want to create a space were it would be unnatural and shameful not to be engaged in such research. The faculty is eager to regularly attract renowned scholars from Russia and abroad. Furthermore, we need to find the right forms of research support such as the creation of research groups and laboratories, regular seminars, conferences and schools, and providing support to our colleagues taking part in significant academic events related to the faculty’s activities around the world.
The third objective is to interact with academic partners and industry players, as well as maintain regular contacts with information technology specialists. It’s hard to overestimate the importance of experience and direct involvement in the educational process on the part the members of leading academic centres and knowledge-intensive companies. In addition, we need mechanisms that allow us to transmit this experience to the educational process, research and project work at the faculty. It is our job to inform students and their parents more about the faculty in order to attract keen and motivated learners. We must also pay particular attention to the faculty’s everyday activities. This is hard work, but it is also interesting and perfectly represents us.
