HSE Scientists Win Prestigious International Prize in Fundamental Physics

The 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics has been awarded to the international collaborations of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, including the LHCb collaboration, in which researchers from HSE University have participated.

League of Robot Runners: HSE Team Wins International Competition
A team of students from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, led by Anton Andreychuk, a researcher from the AIRI Institute, won first place in all categories of the international League of Robot Runners competition. This contest for developers focuses on advancing research in multi-agent pathfinding (MAPF) and AI-based task distribution systems for large warehouses.

As part of the FonCode 2024 contest, the Russian Competitive Programming Federation (CPF) held its first award ceremony. Fedor Romashov, a student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, won the best competitive programmer award, and Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the FCS Centre of Student Competitions, was named the best coach.

On December 8, 2024, HSE’s Pokrovka campus hosted the first HSE CS x BRICS Ideathon, organised by the Hackathon Club of the Faculty of Computer Science and the HSE Multilateral Strategic Projects Office. The event was supported by the BRICS Expert Council–Russia, which endorsed the initiative as part of HSE's activities in the BRICS Network University.

In early December, the finals of the Yandex Cup international programming competition took place in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). The prize, which totalled a record 16 million roubles, was shared among the winners from Russia, Belarus, Japan, the USA, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Dmitry Rempel, student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, won in the Backend track.

On December 13–15, 2024, the final round of theNorthern Eurasia Contests (the semi-final of theInternational Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC)) took place. Six teams from the HSEFaculty of Computer Science (FCS) participated, and each of them won an award. The overall winner was the FCS team Surstrumien Bobra.

The grand finale of Sber's international hackathon for Web3 developers, DeFi Hack 2024, concluded with five finalist teams. A total of 145 teams from 31 regions of Russia, as well as Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Serbia, participated in the competition.

On December 5, the award ceremony of the RUSSOFT ranking of top universities took place. The ranking assesses the quality and scale of specialist training in the field of software development among Russian educational institutions. HSE University took fourth place in the 2024 rankings and was named a ‘federal leader.’

Winners of the Yandex and HSE Olympiad Develop an AI Model to Assess Vehicle Condition
Yandex Education and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have concluded the first joint Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis Olympiad (AIDAO). The winning team, AI Capybara from ITMO University, developed an AI model that detects defects in vehicle exteriors and interiors. The challenge for the competition was devised by the Yandex Taxi machine learning team, who will evaluate the feasibility of implementing the AI model in practice.

In early November, the final of the MTS True Tech Champ—which brought together more than 12,500 schoolchildren, students, and young programmers—took place. Alexander Babin, student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, was named the winner of the ‘Algorithmic Programming’ track.
