From July 13 to 16, 2026, the Faculty of Computer Science hosted the Russian–Sino Research Seminar on Machine Learning Applications, organised by the HSE Laboratory for Cloud and Mobile Technologies in partnership with the Harbin Institute of Technology (China). A delegation comprising seven students and three university representatives travelled to Moscow to take part in an intensive four-day programme.

The 27th IEEE International Conference of Young Professionals in Electron Devices and Materials (EDM) has taken place in the Altai Republic. This year, researchers from HSE University presented the results of their research and were involved in organising a new section on artificial intelligence. A paper by HSE master’s student Rodion Sidorenko was awarded third place in the research paper competition at the conference.

Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) presented their work at theInternational Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2026) in Seoul, South Korea, one of the leading scientific events in the field. Several projects by the faculty’s researchers received the prestigious Spotlight distinction.

The Russian Science Foundation (RSF) has completed its review of project proposals submitted for grants supporting early-career researchers. More than 850 projects have been selected for funding, including 31 from HSE University. The grants will finance research addressing specific objectives within the priorities of scientific and technological development set out in the Scientific and Technological Development Strategy of the Russian Federation.

Researchers at HSE University, in collaboration with colleagues from other Russian institutions, have identified which mutations in the ACVRL1 gene may be pathogenic in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. The team modelled how genetic variations affect ATP binding to the protein—a process essential for transmitting signals required for normal vascular function. The researchers found that 20 of the 32 variants studied can disrupt signal transmission and are therefore likely to cause disease. The findings have been published in the Journal of Structural Biology.

Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, along with students from the AI360: Artificial Intelligence Engineering track of the Applied Mathematics and Information Science bachelor’s programme, took part in ICLR, one of the world’s most prestigious international conferences on machine learning and representation learning. This year’s event was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

From October 21 to 24, 2025, the 23rd Conference on International Exchange of Professionals took place in Shanghai and Beijing, bringing together more than 7,000 scientists and experts from around the world. HSE University was represented by Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, and Vasily Gromov, Head of the Laboratory for Semantic Analysis of the Centre for Language and Semantic Technologies.

Participation in high-level international events is crucial for the professional development of researchers starting their career in science. It provides an opportunity to exchange ideas, create promising teams, and make important connections. This summer, Denis Ryapolov and Askar Tsyganov, students of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science programme and staff of the AI and Digital Sciences Institute at the Faculty of Computer Science of HSE University, attended the prestigious international Conference on Learning Theory, COLT 2025, which was held in Lyon, France. In an interview, they shared their experiences and impressions from the trip.

The annual Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) offers students the chance to showcase their work, such as term papers or theses. It is a valuable opportunity to receive expert feedback and recommendations aimed at improving research, as well as to take the first steps in an academic career. On May 30, 2025, a general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) announced the results of the elections for its full and corresponding members. Around 1,800 individuals took part in the voting. Among those elected this year are scholars from HSE University.
