Faculty of Computer Science Invites Applications for Assistant Professor Positions

Faculty of Computer Science of the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia invites applications for full-time, tenure-track positions of Assistant Professor in all areas of computer science including but not limited to programming language theory, software engineering, system programming, algorithms, distributed and parallel computation, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Knowledge of Russian is not required, as teaching and research are both conducted in English.

Four invited foreign specialists gave lectures about the application of parametric and nonparametric probabilistic methods in machine learning, and representatives of Russian scientific groups told about particular projects where these approaches are used.

On August 6-11 the 34th International Conference on Machine Learning was held in Sydney, Australia. This conference is ranked A* by CORE, and is one of two leading conferences in the field of machine learning. It has been held annually since 2000, and this year, more than 1,000 participants from different countries took part.

The 6th International Conference on Analysis of Images, Social Networks and Texts Held in Moscow

The 6th International Conference on Analysis of Images, Social Networks and Texts was held on July 27-29 in Moscow with the support of the Higher School of Economics. This year 130 papers from different universities, including many international ones, were submitted for the conference. The best works were selected by renowned experts in data analysis from all over the world; these papers will be included in the conference proceedings and published in the series ‘Lecture Notes in Computer Science’ issued by Springer.

A team of researchers from the HSE Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) has won a contest held by the Presidential Research Funding Programme. Researchers with the laboratory are developing a system of algorithms that will help physicists look for new particles in the Large Hadron Collider.

In December 2016, five new international laboratories opened up at the Higher School of Economics, one of which was the International Laboratory of Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods. This lab focuses on combined neural Bayesian models that bring together two of the most successful paradigms in modern-day machine learning – the neural network paradigm and the Bayesian paradigm.

At the end of December new issue of Higher Education in Russia and Beyond journal was presented. The issue is dedicated to IT education and Computer Science developing in Russia. Several faculty staff participated in the issue’s preparation: speakers I. Arzhantsev, M. Gustokashin, A. Konushin, V. Kuliamin, A. Petrenko, V. Podolskii, A. Sobolevski, V. Shilov were speakers and guest editor S. Zavarin.
