The results of the vote were announced at the General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), which took place from June 1-3. The newly elected Members and Corresponding Members of the RAS include eight scholars from HSE University.
Research & Expertise
The HSE Centre for Artificial Intelligence, together with its partners in industry, is working on 25 applied projects in the fields of telecommunications, finance, education, medicine, etc. The results of the work by researchers and developers were recently presented at a meeting of a Russian government working group. That meeting summed up the initial results of the federal Artificial Intelligence project, part of the national Digital Economy programme.
Which brain lobes should we stimulate to improve our short-term memory? What is ‘warm radiation’ and why it is so important that people help each other? Which manufacturing systems will artificial intelligence master the fastest? Scholars from HSE University offered their scientific opinions on all these and more at the ZIL.Nauka festival.
The research community gave a highly positive assessment of a joint application by researchers from HSE University and their Indian colleagues in affine algebraic geometry, particularly the problems of cancellation. The head of the project on the Russian side is HSE FCS Dean Ivan Arzhantsev; on the Indian side, the project is led by renowned mathematician Neena Gupta.
Ten universities and institutes have announced a partnership to construct an electron-positron collider in order to study the production and properties of charmed particles and tau leptons. The new experiment will be part of the Super C-Tau Factory project. It was founded by two international teams and eight from Russia, including HSE University.
The international conference Topology of Torus Actions and Related Topics organized by the International Laboratory of Algebraic Topology and its Applications and Sirius Mathematical Centre was held in Sochi on October 25-29.
Researchers of the Laboratory of Complex Systems Modeling and Control have proposed a missing component of the mechanism of self-organized criticality, which will enable the reproduction of power-law patterns observed in the real world. According to the researchers, this can be used to improve our understanding of the the processes leading to strong earthquakes, forest fires, financial market crashes, and a sudden synchronization of social networks. The results of the research were published in the Scientific Reports journal.
A competition of research centres looking to receive grants through the Artificial Intelligence federal project has concluded, and HSE University is among the winners. Winning centres will focus on developing new AI technologies that expand its application, overcoming existing limitations for solving applied problems and optimizing AI models.
A group of scientists from Hungary, Russia and Finland have developed a system capable of selecting cancer cells of a specific shape and size—spheroids. SpheroidPicker, the first AI device of its kind, enables a more standardized approach to working with tumour samples. The results of the research have been published in the journal Scientific Reports. One of researchers who worked on the project is Nikita Moshkov, Junior Research Fellow of the Laboratory on AI for Computational Biology.
The Genetics of Cardiovascular Diseases Consortium, the first of this kind in Russia, was unveiled at HSE University at Cardiogenetics and Bioinformatics: 2021 Realities, an interdisciplinary forum. The consortium aims to compile a centralized and complete catalogue of the Russian population’s genomic mutations.
