A team which includes several HSE students has won the SAP InnoJam hackaton in Moscow. The winners will now move forward to the SAP InnoJam in Europe this autumn.

SAS in cooperation with HSE has organized and hosted Russia's first hackathon for advanced analytics SAS – an IT marathon that lets students and young specialists try their hand in solving topical analytical cases in the banking sphere.

Second year Software Engineering students Anton Kondrashov and Alexander Lazarenko have taken first place in the Robot Battle hackathon organized by Yandex. Participants had to write a bot for any popular messaging service, that could quickly and easily solve users’ payment problems.

A career in science and technology might sound appealing to the average Russian, but a recent survey showed that most Russians believe men are better suited for this line of work than women. The young women interviewed for this story, a mathematician and a programmer, are of a different opinion.

On November 28th – 29th, 2015, a hackathon on Azure Machine Learning took place at the Microsoft office in Moscow. Student teams from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science won the Data Modelling category and received a special prize for solving the Alfa Bank problem in the Data Visualization category.

Third year software engineering student Vadim Drobinin took part in the Hacktrainhackathon last weekend in Britain (November 21-22). The project, developed by the international team Vadim is part of, will be presented to the British Minister of Transport and compete for 25,000 pounds worth of investment. 

Bruno Bauwens, an expert in Kolmogorov complexity, is a new recruit at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. He started in September 2015. Bruno received his PhD from Ghent University in Belgium, after which he held postdoctoral fellowships at Porto University (Portugal), as well as at the University of Montpellier and University of Lorraine. Associate Professor Bruno Bauwens spoke to HSE English News about his research and  about settling in to life and work in the international academic community in Moscow.

Gregory Tareyev, a Software Engineering student, a co-founder and iOS developer of Chill shares his experience with the international editorial AppCoda on Apple Watch development and shows how to build a simple weather app.

In July 2015, students of the Faculty of Computer Science finished their exams, but not their studies. This summer they will be having internships in leading IT companies, conducting research at HSE research departments and taking part in summer schools. Students of the faculty will also work as lecturers and assistants at some of the events.

Students of the Higher School of Economics have developed an app called Chill that allows users to talk to their friends on their portable devices (the Apple Watch and Android Wear) without using text or voice. The application went on the market June 9^th and was instantly added to Product Hunt, the world’s largest platform for startups.
