As part of the official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the People’s Republic of China, the HSE delegation led by Rector Nikita Anisimov concluded new cooperation agreements with major Chinese universities. The agreements are designed to expand bilateral partnerships in education, science, and cultural exchange.

The annual Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) offers students the chance to showcase their work, such as term papers or theses. It is a valuable opportunity to receive expert feedback and recommendations aimed at improving research, as well as to take the first steps in an academic career. This year, the European AI Conference (ECAI 2025) accepted an article titled ‘Multi-Agent Path Finding for Large Agents is Intractable’  by Artem Agafonov, a second-year student of the Applied Mathematics and Information Science Bachelor’s programme at HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science. The work was co-authored by Konstantin Yakovlev, Head of the Joint Department with Intelligent Technologies of System Analysis and Management at the Federal Research Centre ‘Informatics and Management’ of the RAS and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. In the interview, Artem Agafonov explained how he came up with the idea for the article and how he was able to present it at an A-level conference.

Members of the Russian national team at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2025), gold and silver medal winners Petr Losev and Daria Grekova, have joined the Applied Mathematics and Information Science degree programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science.

Mathematicians around the world share a common language and continue to collaborate despite the challenges of recent years. The hub of mathematical networking has been shifting to China, where scientists from various countries meet at conferences and other academic events. Partnerships with leading Chinese universities offer promising opportunities to strengthen existing ties and forge new ones. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Valery Gritsenko, Head of the HSE International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms, discusses this and other topics, including what AI is and why the state should engage with mathematicians.

HSE University has launched a few strategic technological projects aimed at achieving the institution’s target development model. These projects focus on creating a portfolio of innovative products and services that fall under three key areas: socio-economic, science, and technology foresight, as well as 6G communication technologies and artificial intelligence.

In June 2025, the finals of the International Cybersecurity Olympiad (ICO) took place in Singapore. The Russian national team competed alongside 128 talented school students from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, and others. The Russian team secured silver and took second place in the overall team ranking. This result was made possible thanks to the individual achievements of the team members, including Mikhail Selin, an 11th-grade student at the HSE Lyceum, who won a bronze medal.

On July 19 and 20, 2025, Russia’s largest youth festival, VK Fest, took place at the Luzhniki stadium. HSE University presented its advanced developments, including a prototype for the CubeSX-HSE satellite and hi-tech games powered by AI. Everyone could participate in the ‘Human or AI’ quiz or attend workshops on spacecraft assembly and game design basics.

An international team of scientists, including researchers from HSE University, has developed a new generative model called the Wyckoff Transformer (WyFormer) for creating symmetrical crystal structures. The neural network will make it possible to design materials with specified properties for use in semiconductors, solar panels, medical devices, and other high-tech applications. The scientists will present their work at ICML, a leading international conference on machine learning, on July 15 in Vancouver. A preprint of the paper is available on arxiv.org, with the code and data released under an open-source license.
