From December 1 to 20, registration will be held for HSE’s Open Optional Courses, slated to start in the second half of the 2016/2017 academic year. Per tradition, these courses will be free of charge and open not only to HSE students, but also anybody interested in expanding their knowledge.

As of today, HSE offers 46 courses on Coursera, an international online education platform, and one third of them are English-taught. This means that HSE is one of the Top 10 universities by the number of online courses offered on that platform.

Over the course of three months, 11 students from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science interned for Google at the company’s offices in the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain, and Poland. The HSE News Service spoke with several of these students and learned how they got the internships, how Google treats its interns, and whether or not a refrigerator full of ice cream interferes with the work process.

On June 20-27, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science teamed up with the Yandex School of Data Analysis to carry out the Second International Summer School in Machine Learning in High Energy Physics. This year’s Summer School took place in Lund, Sweden, and saw the participation of 60 students and researchers from Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia, the U.S., Sweden, Switzerland, and more. Of these students, five came from the Higher School of Economics.

The Master’s programme in System and Software Engineering aims to provide students an opportunity not only to acquire the knowledge and experience they need in their chosen profession, but also to help them generate a systemic view on bringing resolutions to the difficult professional challenges they are certain to face in the future. On 25th of April Faculty of Computer Science held a Workshop on Computer linguistics and language science, which was organized jointly by the Department of data analysis and artificial intelligence and the School of linguistics.

A team which includes several HSE students has won the SAP InnoJam hackaton in Moscow. The winners will now move forward to the SAP InnoJam in Europe this autumn.

HSE took first place among Russian universities in subject rankings for Sociology and Economics & Econometrics (101-150 globally). In Business & Management Studies and Accouting & Finance, HSE ranked first and is currently the only Russian university in the ranking, placing in the 151-200 group.
