From October 28th to November 16th, 2014, Nikita Alexandrov, 2nd-year student of Applied Mathematics and Information Science, participated in a research workshop on combinatorial geometry supervised by Igor Pak, professor at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Mathematics Department. Nikita spoke on ‘Borsuk‘s Hypothesis and Related Tasks’.
From November 9th to 15th 2014, Prof. José Valente de Oliveira, a renowned international expert from the University of Algarve, Portugal, delivered a course of lectures on ‘Modern Methods of Data Analysis’ for master’s students of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science School of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence.
On the blog of European multinational software corporation SAP, Siraj Mayen, a student in HSE’s Faculty of Computer Science, discussed what it is like studying in Russia, as well as his research project in the field of e-health. Before moving to Russia, Siraj spent three years working as an IT specialist in Qatar. He was able to successfully apply his knowledge and experience to his work at the Higher School Economics and to his projects with SAP. Siraj is currently a second year master’s student in the System and Software Engineering programme, as well as a participant of the SAP University Alliance.
The Higgs Boson Machine Learning Challenge, the largest international competition in data analysis and machine learning came to a close on 15 September. Second year MA computer science MA student Stanislav Semenov won 7th place in the final count, crowning 4 months of intense work.
From Spring 2015 the highest-achieving undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Computer Science Faculty will be eligible for the Ilya Segalovich grant – named after the founder of Yandex. All students – including first years – will be able to apply for the grant.
Over the course of 20 years, since the beginning of contemporary medicine’s transition into a digital format, a vast amount of largely unused data has amassed. The analysis of these data and the extraction of a new logic of control from them is one of the most popular areas of focus in applied mathematics, Oleg Pianykh, a Professor in HSE’s Department of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, said in a report. His report, 'Big Data in Medicine: How to Make them Work,' was presented at HSE’s academic seminar 'Mathematical Models of Information Technologies.'
