Faculty of Computer Science thrives and flourishes even during the pandemic. We have already told you how the Faculty switched to distance learning . However, the Faculty is a research centre as well as the educational one. It comprises twelve laboratories researching into data science, theoretical computer science, process-oriented information systems, bioinformatics, financial technologies, and other fields of study. We want to tell you about the progress of research at the Faculty of Computer Science during the first half of 2020.

Over the last decades, the International Mathematics Competition for University Students has acquired universal fame and recognition, as well as sponsorships from companies like Huawei and Wolfram. Every year, hundreds of participants from around the globe meet in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria to compete.

Meet Madina Atymkhanova, 2^nd year master student from Kazakhstan studying Data Science at the Faculty of Computer Science. She told us about advantages of HSE University, upcoming international mobility and what motivates her in life.

What defines a good university? Is it students’ achievements, cutting-edge research, or bright projects? The success of the university depends on many different things – that’s why international university rankings use complex methodologies and take many criteria into account. The administration is a thing often forgotten. They are often overlooked, despite being responsible for a lot of stuff. To correct this injustice, we are starting a series on the invisible heroes of the academe. Our first is Ekaterina Volzhenina, manager of the Centre of Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods, who is also teaching history at HSE University. She told us about the transformation of her work during the quarantine, how our ancestors fought the Pechenegs and tried to answer the main question: hard and soft science?

Students of the first cohort of the HSE’s online Master of Data Science are now completing their first semester. Offered entirely online on Coursera, the programme attracts students from all over the world. HSE News Service spoke with two international students about what drew them to the programme, the courses they have taken so far, and what their online student community is like.

Four people have received this award for their achievements in the field of Computer Science: two HSE University graduate students, one doctoral student, and Sergei Obiedkov, Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations at the Faculty of Computer Science.

The digital competencies HSE students will develop

This year, Russia’s largest science and technology festival, Geek Picnic, was held online for the first time. Despite the new format, the festival programme included all of the event’s usual key features: expert lectures, workshops, competitions, and opportunities to socialize and network with fellow tech and science enthusiasts. HSE University once again served as the festival’s content partner.

In 2019, Ksenia Medvedeva graduated from Data Analysis in Biology and Medicine master programme. Here she talks about her experience of HSE University, an internship at Kharkevitch Institute for Information Transmission Problems, and her interest in bioinformatics. 

HSE became the leader of this ranking for the first time, outperforming Moscow State University, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and other Russian universities. Universities were assessed on the basis of three indicators, Quality of Education, Quality of Graduates and the ‘Forbes Factor’.
