Adaptation Course in Linear Algebra in English

Instrucor: Vladislav Balakirev

Duration: 3-4

Credits: 2

Annotation:

The compulsory course on linear algebra is one of the most important mathematical courses for any computer science-related programme. It's well-know that there is a gap between the school mathematics and the first-year university courses such as linear algebra. While the first one heavily relies on big lists of formulas given with almost no explanation the other one requiers understanding abstract definitions and deriving new results by logical reasoning. As a result, it is typical for first year students to experience problems with proofs while being perfectly good with the computations.

The course is intended to help students to overcome the gap by discussing the most challenging topics from the compulsory course. We will learn to provide proofs and to derive formulas intstead of memorizing them.

The course topics will mostly depend on the student's requests and may include:

- sets and maps, surjectivity, injectivity
- complex numbers
- what is the difference between R-dimdension and C-dimension?
- injectiivity and kernels, surjectivity and images
- linear transformations and their matrices, change of basis
- linear operators and eignvectors
- clever tricks to compute things

Grade: 0.5*(Hometasks)+0.5*(seminar activities)
