English Language Elective Grammar Course

Аннотация: The course is optional and aimed at helping A2-B1 students majoring in Data Science and Business Analytics to improve their knowledge of English grammar and use it effectively in speaking and writing. That involves revising basic grammar, learning new grammar rules and constructions, practicing them in drills and communicative activities both in the classroom and at home. Students’ progress through the course is continuously assessed during classroom activities, upon the completion of homework assignments, by means of progress tests, an interim examination in module 2 and a final test in module 4.

The range of grammar topics is diverse and covers present, past and future tenses, modals,

passives, verb patterns, comparatives and superlatives, nouns, pronouns, determiners and

articles, reported speech, and subordinate clauses. The grammar points are discussed thoroughly during the lessons with their meaning, form and pronunciation clarified and practice in using them in numerous exercises provided. Grammar mistakes while doing the drills are immediately corrected and explained as a greater emphasis is placed on accuracy. More practice in using new grammar is offered as freer speaking or writing activities on familiar topics. Further memorisation of each grammar point is ensured by regular homework assignments and revision activities in the classroom during the following lessons and monitored by progress tests.

At the end of the course, the students are expected to advance their knowledge of English

grammar and their ability to use it, which results in the improvement of their overall language competence and confidence.
